Short History
It used to be that Westeros was divided and it wasn't until Aegon "The Conqueror" Targaryen that the continent was united under one rule. Him and his sister wives formed the Iron throne. Though Dorne, unlike the other places in Westeros, was able to resist Aegon and joined the Iron Throne on their own terms.
When Robert Baratheon took the Iron Throne at the conclusion of Robert's Rebellion, it was the first time in a long time that Westeros wasn't under the rule of a Targaryen. Upon his death the Seven Kingdoms were thrown into chaos with the North separating from the rest.
Cersei Lannister ended up taking the Iron Throne until Daenerys Targaryen took the position. But the Lannister stayed in power as she became Daenerys' queen. Both were overthrown by Rin Kaari who stopped their mad rule.
For two hundred years she and Jorah Mormont created an era of peace for Westeros. During that time she also slowly introduced democracy into the society. After two hundred years both left and now it is ruled by one of her children.
